  • “The Hand of the Lord” Lenten Series

Whether tightening a bolt, tying a quilt, or typing on computer, there is much we do with our hands. The ancient Greeks once called our hands “the" instrument of instruments.” Hands can be used to heal or hurt, work or wreck, seize or surrender, and on and on.

Hands are an important part of the Bible, especially in reference to God. “The Lord’s hand” is mentioned over two hundred times in the Old Testament. For instance, the Lord’s hand is active in creation, power, control over things happening in the world, judgment, and salvation. All things are the work of the Lord’s hands (Ps. 102:25). The hand of the Lord was upon Ezekiel when He gave him a vision (Ez. 3:22), and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines in the days of Samuel (1 Sam. 7:13).

In the New Testament, the Lord’s hands take on new meaning when Jesus comes to us in human form. Jesus hands are the Lord’s hands, and we see the way He uses them to bring healing, forgiveness, life, and salvation. Jesus uses His hands to save drowning Peter, feed the multitudes, touch those who were considered unclean, stop a funeral in its tracks, raise up the dead, and bless the little children.

Most especially, Jesus allows Himself to be “delivered into the hands of men” (Luke 9:44). His hands are pierced for the sins of the world. But He also uses His hands to bring peace and blessing when He rises again. Jesus now holds us, and no one can snatch us from His hand (John 10:28). Join us this Lenten Season and Holy Week for our series, “The Hand of the Lord.” We will consider the many ways in which Jesus comes to love, serve, and raise us up with His hands. Invite a friend, as well!
